Empowerment: Mental Health Support Conference
Time & Location
Nov 13, 2021, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. EST
About the event
This conference will help international students to access the larger mental health community in Ontario and give you a clear sense of the rights and resources you were originally entitled to. Everyone is welcome! You won't want to miss this valuable opportunity to meet face-to-face with professionals in the mental health field!
Empowerment is significant in today's era of pandemic turmoil, but dialogues about equal rights towards mental health support for international students are often marginalized, confusing, and frustrating. This is mainly manifested in the fact that the Ontario provincial government has not prepared mental health resources specifically for international students until now. While it is implied that international students can use the same resources as domestic students, this omits the uniqueness of the challenges that those international students face. Specifically, the lack of targeted accommodations, social support for acculturation, and the language barrier makes the process of looking for help even more daunting and may potentially dissuade international students across Ontario from seeking help for their mental health needs. Based on this situation, we plan to run this conference in the hopes of bridging the gap between international students and extended mental health support in Ontario.
